Why Float?

Floating has been shown to offer relief for a wide range of ailments and conditions on top of being an incredibly unique and relaxing experience for both mind and body, one that cannot be experienced anywhere else on Earth.

Pain Management The unique environment provided by floatation therapy removes gravitational force, relieving body pressure and stress, including that related to arthritis, back pain, neck pain, tendinitis, bursitis, inflammation, blood pressure and fibromyalgia symptoms.

Healing Due to the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system while floating, the body is flooded with endorphins and dopamine. These neurotransmitters allow pain relief and mod enhancement.  Floating increases circulation, distributing oxygen and nutrients to the body.  Enhanced muscle relaxation, reduction in physical stress, increased immune function, visual acuity and perception have notable increases after floating.

Brain State Your brain will cycle between Alpha and theta brainwave patterns during a float session, achieving mental stillness, leaving you feeling very relaxed and rejuvenated.  Our bodies produce a significant amount of cortisol, the primary precursor to stress production in our brains.

Magnesium The high concentration of magnesium sulphate in the water allows high levels of this mineral to be topically absorbed, regulating blood pressure, assisting detoxification and aids in the prevention of cardiovascular disease.  It also serves a powerful recovery tool for athletes with muscle soreness or sport injuries.

The Float

We provide everything you need (towels, earplugs, body wash / shampoo / conditioner / hairdryer / makeup remover...) Don't drink coffee for at least 4 hours or smoke 1 hour beforehand (it can make your system jittery).  Eating a light meal about an hour to 90 minutes ahead of time aids hunger pains.  If you wear contacts, they must be removed and placed in a suitable container provided by you before floating.

The float therapist determines allowances made for all guests at the pHloat Pavilion.  A guide to determine eligibility to continue with your pHloat appointment includes:

No hair dyes or treatments 7 days prior.       Intoxication by drugs or alcohol.       Gastro or diarrhoea at least 2 weeks prior.                ANY contagious disease or infectious skin condition.      Extreme sunburn.     Shaving or waxing 24 hours prior (salt irritation).        Low blood pressure.     Any unstable mental condition or epilepsy.

Check in to the spa 10 minutes before your appointment time.  This allows enough time to be shown around the facility and pavilion.  The float therapist will explain the procedure around your float experience.  You will need to shower before you enter the bath to remove any contaminates, makeup and hair products and rinse off again after you complete your float time.

The FAQs

Can more than one person float at a time?

Only one person per session but appointments can be made around furthering your Day Spa experience while your spa partner floats after you.

Will my skin wrinkle like it does in the bathtub?

No.  The salt in the water is a natural skin emollient.  Your skin will feel silky smooth.

Can I float if I'm pregnant?

Absolutely.  Pregnant women love floating!  There is even a special position you can float in that relieves all of the weight of the baby off the mother's body.  If you are in your third trimester, or have any concerns, please consult your physician before arriving.

Can I drown if I fall asleep in there?

No.  Some people fall asleep, but the water is so buoyant that you stay afloat.  A special pillow is provided if you need to ensure your head stays above water.

How is the bath kept clean?

The solution is filtered on a triple cycle between each float via magnetic filtration components at a rate of 1000l / 3 minutes over a 15 minute period.  The amount of pure salt in the bath raises the salinity to levels that are extremely inhospitable to bacteria, microbes and other pathogens.

The Basics

The pHloat Pavilion at Blair Athol Day Spa has been specifically designed with your privacy and personal experience in mind.  The secluded pavilion provides an intimate sanctuary with its private spacious open bath, independent rain shower (which you'll use before and after your float) and all essential luxuries to make your experience indulgent and comfortable.

The bath provides a sensory free environment, containing a solution of rainwater 700 kgs of ancient salt sourced from Germany.  This amount of pure salt raises the salinity to levels that are extremely inhospitable to bacteria, microbes and other pathogens.  The solution is approximately 30 cm deep and maintained at our external body temperature (34.5 deg Celsius) making skin receptors neutral, allowing the sense of not knowing where your body ends and the water begins.  Earplugs are provided while your ears stay just below the water.  Noise from the outside doesn't reach you through the triple insulated purpose-built pavilion.  Once you turn off the bath controlled light, you are in total darkness.  A float 'pillow' (if you wish to use one) is provided.  It is recommended that you float without a swimming costume as the detergents and plastic particles in the clothing could compromise the integrity of the water quality.

Your float technician will discuss the pre-requisites for achieving the perfect float and any special needs you may have, before your arrival to the spa.  The health and comfort of all our clients are of foremost concern to staff at the spa.

To truly experience the cumulative benefits of floating, we recommend booking 3 sessions initially, spaced within 2 months to fully understand and acquire the long-term health and wellbeing advantages of floating.
